WWI CENTENARY FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM – 2018 – .9999 GOLD £100
The design of this coin is symbolic to the end of the war effort, and Armistice itself. The design features soldiers returning from war in a march to celebrate victory and freedom. The polished ‘V’ section at the top of the coin symbolises 11 o’clock; the war ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day.
Commemorated with a two-minute silence every year on the 11th November, Armistice Day marks the end of World War I. taking effect at 11am – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”. in 1918, this armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, signalling the end of the hostilities on the Western Front.
Also known as Remembrance Day and Veterans Day, Armistice Day was first held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of 11th November 1919. Armistice Day has been observed ever since with two minutes of silence as a sign of respect. The first minute is dedicated to the 20 million people who died in World War I, and the second minute to the loved ones of the fallen who were left behind. Lest we Forget.
