THE GEORGE CROSS – 2014 – 1oz .9999 SATIN GOLD £100
The George Cross is second in the order of medal wear in Great Britain and is the highest honour a civilian can receive in recognition of their heroism and bravery. It surpasses all other British honours, save for the coveted Victoria Cross, which is restricted to military and former military personnel.
This relatively new honour was instituted on 24th September 1940 during the height of the German Blitz over the United Kingdom. There was a resolute desire to grant recognition and reward to the many civilians who displayed unshakeable grit and courage when taking part in the civic defence of targeted cities. It was felt necessary to issue the George Cross for “acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.” The coin’s reverse design features a superbly etched relief of the George Cross in a realistic interpretation of the medal, with St. George and the Dragon catching the eye in a striking poise within the centre, and a depiction of King George VI of the eponymous award laid into the right-foreground.
