Rosland Gold

PCGS-graded St. George Cross Limited Edition 1oz Satin Proof in Box

From £5,539.35
This beautiful 1oz 999 Satin-proof gold £100 coin is extremely rare, and maintains a striking of just 100. Satin-proofs carry a great deal of historical significance, and were often specially manufactured by mints as experiments to display a soft ‘pebbly’ surface which provides the highest detail possible in the coin’s design. Satin-proof coins are amongst the rarest in the world; their contemporary lack of popularity enforced limited-mintages, yet in recent years their value has skyrocketed, and their monetary worth continues to appreciate over time. Each coin is also professionally graded by the PCGS and is individually packaged.

Today the medal is still awarded, the last recipient being on 2nd October 2014, and with only 407 distinct recipients since 1940.

THE GEORGE CROSS – 2014 – 1oz .9999 SATIN GOLD £100

The George Cross is second in the order of medal wear in Great Britain and is the highest honour a civilian can receive in recognition of their heroism and bravery. It surpasses all other British honours, save for the coveted Victoria Cross, which is restricted to military and former military personnel.

This relatively new honour was instituted on 24th September 1940 during the height of the German Blitz over the United Kingdom. There was a resolute desire to grant recognition and reward to the many civilians who displayed unshakeable grit and courage when taking part in the civic defence of targeted cities. It was felt necessary to issue the George Cross for “acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.” The coin’s reverse design features a superbly etched relief of the George Cross in a realistic interpretation of the medal, with St. George and the Dragon catching the eye in a striking poise within the centre, and a depiction of King George VI of the eponymous award laid into the right-foreground.
