A striking image of Pope John Paul II with hands together in prayer and emblem with crossed keys symbolising the keys to the kingdom of heaven, as held by St Peter.
The date 27th April 2014 is symbolic as it was on this day, Divine Mercy Sunday, that John Paul II was canonised during a service in St Peter’s Square, Rome. He became Pope in 1978 which was an historic event in itself as he was the first non-Italian Pope to be elected in more than 400 years.
He was a very popular Pope and visited more than 100 countries during his tenure. He died in Rome on 2nd April 2005 at the age of 84.
