The official design name is actually ‘Four Portraits’, but it has quickly been ‘upped’ to ‘5-Portraits’ as whilst the Four Portraits are on the reverse of the coin, the latest (and fifth) Queen’s portrait is on the front of the coin – making a total of five!
--
This four-portrait design on the reverse of the coin depicts the four portraits of the Queen that have appeared on UK circulating coins over the course of her reign. These 1oz gold proof coins are based on the designs by Mary Gillick (1953), Arnold Machin (1971), Raphael Maklouf (1985) and Ian Rank-Broadley (1998).
The obverse bears a new 2015 portrait especially commissioned by the Commonwealth Mint and designed by renowned American artist Joel Iskowitz, whose wide and varied designs have been used extensively by the U.S. Mint.
