‘D-DAY’ Sovereign – 2014 – 8g - 22ct PROOF GOLD

This D-Day official coin series was issued to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings the largest seaborne invasion in history and a turning point in WWII.

On the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings we pay tribute to the heroes who took part in the greatest amphibious assault in history on the beaches of Normandy. Codenamed Operation Neptune, the D-Day Landings took place on June 6, 1944. Spearheaded by American, British and Canadian troops, Allied Forces stormed the beaches codenamed Utah, Omaha, Juno and Sword. Naval vessels bombarded the heavily fortified German defences as Allied aircraft flew over 14,000 sorties. A formidable Allied force of 156,000 troops, 6,939 vessels, 50,000 vehicles and 11,000 aircraft combined to reclaim the Normandy beaches. Together, they secured victory by land, sea and air in a campaign that led to the liberation of Western Europe.

The rear of the coin has an inspiring design with a charging soldier. The design features an outline of the French coastline with the names of the landing points (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword).

The obverse bears a new 2015 portrait especially commissioned by the Commonwealth Mint and designed by renowned American artist Joel Iskowitz, whose wide and varied designs have been used extensively by the U.S. Mint.
