One of the most important features of a coin, and the key to its value, is its condition. Collectors will always pay a significant premium for coins in outstanding condition. That’s why professional “grading” is so important to the collector.
Grading is done by an independent grading organization. They inspect every single coin minutely, and each coin is given its grade, between 1 and 70. 70 means a perfect coin with a full strike and no marking whatsoever and 1 means a barely identifiable coin.
PCGS and NGC
Presently, the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) form the top tier of a three tier grading service. They guarantee the grades and authenticity of the coins. Rosland only uses NGC and PCGS for coin-grading.
Once the coin is graded, it is sonically sealed in a clear, tamper-proof holder – a “slab”. Anti-counterfeiting measures include a holographic emblem on the back, the design of which changes over time. On the front, the coin information provided includes its type, denomination, grade and a unique serial number assigned to that particular coin, as well as a machine-readable barcode.
